Zoo Erfurt commences the significant hatching process!
Hype at Zoo Erfurt! Say goodbye to boredom! This zoo has some exciting news that'll make your visit unforgettable.
Just recently, Kamila, the female Katta, gave birth to twins, leaving the zoo keepers jumping for joy (we broke the news). But these are just the beginning fireworks! Here's what's coming up next.
Zoo Erfurt drops the bombshell
With over a thousand animals to fawn over, Zoo Erfurt's approximately 63 hectares are ripe for exploration. But one exhibit in particular has the atmosphere crackling. As Zoo Erfurt themselves announced, the grand hatching is on the horizon. The first feathered baby has already made its debut.

"The first five chicks of the Rosaflamingos have hatched and are melting the zoo keepers' hearts," Zoo Erfurt boasts. And that's not all. More eggs are tucked away in sandy cradles, and any moment now, another chick could burst open - a laborious process that can take an entire day, as the little birds laboriously work on breaking free from their hard shells on their own."
Witnessing a spectacle like no other
What's captivating about this? With a dash of luck, visitors to Zoo Erfurt could be there when history unfolds. "The colony has once again chosen to breed directly in front of the visitors' window. Chaos, minor commotion, and territorial squabbles are nothing new to them. They require the pressure of the group to breed successfully," Zoo Erfurt explains.
Additional Buzz:
The Rosaflamingo clan of Zoo Erfurt boasts 42 adults and could welcome 14 new members during the summer months. The gray, fluffy babies leave the nest with their parents four to seven days post-hatching. After 65 to 90 days, the young ones will take their first flight. It takes several weeks for the fluffy chicks to grow tall and for their beaks to acquire their iconic curved shape, typical of flamingos. They'll sport their full pink feathers at around two to three years old.
At Zoo Erfurt, a captivating spectacle is unfolding within the home-and-garden-like setting of the flamingo exhibit, as the colonybreeds directly in view of visitors. This lifestyle experience offers a unique opportunity to witness the birth of up to 14 new flamingo chicks this summer.
