Ximending rainbow crossing's repainting is completed
The multicoloured "Rainbow Six" crossing in Taipei's vibrant Ximending (西門町) area returned yesterday after a month of renovation. This popular tourist attraction, installed in 2019 to mark Taiwan becoming the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage, now boasts brighter colours and a new backdrop.
Foreign visitors Matthieu and Mitzia Perez were among the first to see the renovated crossing. Matthieu, who was attracted to Ximending by online recommendations, visited the area for the first time. Perez, who has been working in New Taipei City for half a year, has visited Ximending several times.
Both visitors shared similar views on the improved backdrop of the reoriented "Rainbow Six". Matthieu noted that the buildings in the previous backdrop didn't look as new, while Perez criticised it as being "kind of off" with buildings and traffic in the background that didn't suit the style.
The renovation work, which began on July 8, included repainting and reorienting the "TAIPEI" lettering. This change allows tourists to photograph the crossing with the bustling Ximending shopping district as the backdrop, rather than the road and buildings across the street as before. This reorientation has drawn mixed reactions from locals and visitors, but both Perez and Matthieu appreciated the improved visibility of the "TAIPEI" lettering in the newly repainted "Rainbow Six".
The renovation was part of preparations for Taipei's annual Pride parade scheduled for October. With its brighter colours and improved backdrop, the "Rainbow Six" crossing is set to be a vibrant symbol of celebration during the parade.
