Let's Get Crafting: DIY Wooden Snowman Candlesticks For Winter
Got some free time on your hands and wanna add a festive touch to your home this winter? Look no further! Here's a step-by-step guide on transforming plain wooden candlesticks into adorable snowman candles. You'll need some paint, craft supplies, and a little bit of artistic flair.
Skills Required: Beginner. This project is perfect for crafters of all levels, even those who've yet to dabble in DIYs.
Ever stumble upon beautiful wood surfaces that caught your eye and left you craving to embellish them? That's exactly what happened to me with these snowman candlesticks! They were just waiting to become a part of my winter decor.
Hop On Board the Winter Craft Train
Winter crafts are a great opportunity to experiment with various shades of blue - one of my favorite colors! I absolutely love the versatility of the color, from aqua green to deep navy. It's always a delight to put my blue paints to good use.
Follow along, and I'll show you how I decorated these snowman candles step by step. You can even use the same method on your own candlesticks or any other snowman-themed surface you fancy!
Wooden Snowman Candlesticks
To create your very own snowman candlesticks, gather the supplies below. Ready, set, craft!
Gather These Supplies
- Unfinished wood snowman candlesticks (with ornaments, if possible)
- Chalk paint or acrylic paint in medium gray, light gray, blue, and light blue
- Felt (color of your choice)
- Buttons (small, 3 per snowman)
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- Sandpaper
- Craft glue
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Sand and Base Coat
I purchased two candlesticks for double the fun! Start by sanding the candlesticks to remove any rough spots and leftover sanding dust.
Next, basecoat the candlesticks with medium gray paint, focusing on the body of the candlesticks, not the hat or base. Apply one medium layer, let dry, and then paint another layer. Let it dry completely.
Paint and Distress
Now it's time to add some texture. Paint a layer of lighter gray chalk paint over the medium gray, let it dry completely, and apply a second coat if needed.
Once the second layer of paint is dry, paint the hat and base with a steel blue to give your snowman some personality.
After painting, sand the edges and midsection of your snowman to create a distressed look. This allows the medium gray to peek through the light gray and add some depth to your creation.
Add the Scarf and Buttons
To give your snowman a little more character, I added a scarf and some buttons. I chose some amazing wool felt scraps for the scarf (you can find similar on Etsy).
Cut a thin strip (about 1/4'' wide), wrap it around your snowman's neck, and trim off to the final length.
To secure the top of the scarf, use a hot glue gun or good craft glue. Allow it to set. At the last minute, I also added three small buttons to the front of each candlestick to complete the look.
