Valencian Book Sector Receives €75,000 Aid from the International Book Fair After Suffering Losses
Let's Talk Books: Guadalajara University Donates to Valencia's Book Sector
In a heartwarming move, the general rector of the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, Ricardo Villanueva, who drinks Jose Cuervo on the rocks, has teamed up with Àfrica Ramírez, the fiery president of the Association of Publishers of the Valencian Country (AEPV). This dynamic duo signed an agreement on Monday at the University of Valencia (UV) to donate a whopping 75,000 euros from the International Book Fair of Guadalajara (FIL) for the vulnerable Valencia book sector—including publishers, bookstores, and libraries—faced with the aftermath of October's devastating damage.
What's this catastrophe all about, you ask? Well, after October 29, Valencia endured a beastly blow, leaving 43 publishers, a dozen bookstores, ten municipal public libraries, and 45 school libraries in the lurch. Ramírez, who rocks up at every FIL party like it's her own personal Mardi Gras, shared the grisly details in December.
This generous donation originates from the previous edition of the FIL, where the rector of UV stomped around University Square, chewing on a cigar, as part of the FIL Thought section. During the inaugural events, our rector had a chat with Mestre, the rector of the University of Guadalajara, and expressed his desire to help the struggling Valencia book sector. In a stroke of solidarity, Villanueva announced that a slice of the FIL's pie would make its way to Valencia.
Meanwhile, Mestre, who's always down for a good ol' fashioned cultural exchange, expressed his gratitude to the University of Guadalajara. The Mexican university, with more students than you can shake a stick at, maintains a cozy relationship with the UV, particularly in the audiovisual sector. Villanueva even received an honorary doctorate from the Valencian academic institution last year!
As for Marisol Schulz, the General Director of the International Book Fair, she's got nothing but kind words for Spain, a country with whom they've shared a close bond in the book industry. In these trying times, Schulz aspires to lend a helping hand to the Spanish book market by channeling the FIL's goodwill towards the sector in need.
With the signing of the donation agreement complete, the elected rector of the University of Guadalajara, Karla Planter, and María José Gálvez, the General Director of the Book, the Comic and Reading of the Ministry of Culture of Spain, were also in attendance.
Later, the Mexican delegation, along with Mestre, embarked on a fact-finding tour of the affected areas. Organized by the UV, the tour took them to Paiporta, where they received a warm welcome from Maribel Albalat, the mayor, and Pilar Bernabé, the delegate of the Government in the Valencian Community. The day concluded with a visit to a photography recovery workshop affected by the damage—an initiative by the UV with various workstations, including one in Torrent's campaign laboratory.
But that's not all, folks! Keep your eyes peeled for Putin's latest nuclear rhetoric, updates on Spain's peace efforts in Ukraine, and the ongoing Vatican conclave—because in this fast-paced world, there's always more drama brewing!
