Unexpected finding in Winnipeg: Couple uncovers cabinet packed with potato vine shoots
In an unexpected turn of events, a Manitoba couple, Brian and Crystal Hood, stumbled upon a unique sight in their china cabinet - a bag of potatoes sprouting tendrils, resembling white tentacles.
The potatoes, which were intended to be used as seed potatoes for this year's garden, had been forgotten in the seldom-used cabinet since October. On Tuesday, when they made the discovery, the tendrils had grown quite extensive.
Brian, an avid gardener in his backyard, was initially puzzled by the sight. He explained that potatoes, when not planted, try to plant themselves. However, the extent of the growth was a surprise to both him and Crystal.
Initially, they assumed the vine was a plant that had gotten stuck in the bag. But as they took a closer look, they realised it was a bag of potatoes growing tendrils.
The couple posted a video of the tentacled potatoes on Instagram under their account HoodGood (@hoodgood90) with the intention of making Brian's mom laugh. Little did they know, the video would soon go viral.
As of Friday, the video had garnered one million views and more than 43,000 likes. Brian found the viral response to the video unbelievable. He believes there are many potato fans on the internet who found the video amusing and intriguing.
Despite the viral fame, Brian and Crystal are unsure what to do with the bag of potatoes. They had originally planned to use them as seed potatoes, but the tendrils have made them reconsider.
Potatoes grow tendrils (sprouts or "eyes") when left in a dry environment primarily due to their natural sprouting process. When potatoes are stored, especially in dry but not cold conditions, the dormant buds on the tuber begin to grow shoots or tendrils. This sprouting is a survival response triggered by environmental cues such as temperature, moisture, and light to grow new plants from the tuber.
Although the video has brought a wave of attention, the Hoods are taking it all in stride. They continue to marvel at their unique potato discovery and are enjoying the unexpected viral fame.
The unique potato discovery of Brian and Crystal Hood, who have a lifestyle of gardening in their home-and-garden, unexpectedly went viral on Instagram with a video showcasing a bag of potatoes growing tendrils. The unexpected fame has left the couple in a dilemma, as they now reconsider using the potatoes as seed potatoes due to the tendrils' extensive growth.
