The Citizenry Organic Stonewashed Percale Sheet Set ($151)
Percale is a type of cotton weave (often called a plain weave), characterized by an over-under style like a checkerboard, giving it a consistently crisp, cool, and lightweight feel. Ideal as cooling sheets, percale resembles hotel sheets or fine button-up shirts. I was initially not a percale fan, but The Citizenry's Organic Stonewashed Percale Sheets have become one of my favorites for summertime thanks to their soft feel and excellent breathability. This sheet set boasts long-staple cotton, making it softer than traditional percale options, while still maintaining breathability to help keep me cool even on hot nights. Moreover, the set is GOTS and Oeko-Tex certified, producing an organic and eco-friendly product.
For another soft, lightweight, and breathable option, consider theSupima Cotton Percale Sheets ($156) from Buffy, featuring long-staple Supima cotton. Despite being slightly more expensive, these often go on sale, providing a great cost-effective alternative.
Fancy a touch of luxury? The Pure Parima's Ultra Percale Sheet Set for $230 offers exceptional softness, coming in at a slightly heavier weight. This may not be optimal for extremely hot sleepers, though it still offers a lighter experience compared to sateen sheets. For a truly crisp feel, the Brooklinen Classic Percale Core Sheet Set ($189) is a solid choice, offering great breathability.

The Best Sateen Sheets

JCPenney Wrinkle Guard Sateen Sheet Set ($90)
Sateen is a cotton weave similar to percale, but with a sense of silkiness due to its three-over-one thread style weave. It tends to be both cooler and slightly heavier, making it suitable for summer months while still being utilitarian during colder periods. JCPenney's Wrinkle Guard sateen sheets are some of my favorites thanks to their soft, cool to the touch texture, and excellent draping ability. Despite being slightly wrinkle-prone, they do not keep me warm, but take care when folding to avoid creases.
The Brooklinen Luxe Core Set ($189) offers a great alternative with similar qualities but a slightly higher thread count (480 versus JCPenney's 400). It is also softer, making it an ideal option if you crave an even silkier feel. On the budget front, the Quince Luxury Organic Signature Sateen Sheet Set ($100) comes highly recommended for its lightweight yet sumptuous combination.
Should you splurge on something super soft and silky, the Pure Parima Triple Luxe Sateen Sheet Set Hotel Collection ($350) may be your ideal choice. This set is certified by the Cotton Egypt Association and Oeko-Tex, and offers a luxurious feel without excessive heat retention typically associated with bamboo or silk.

The Best Bamboo Sheets

Luxome Bamboo Luxury Sheet Set ($185)
Companies are increasingly turning to new materials like bamboo to create bedding, using manufacturing processes like bamboo rayon, viscose, or lyocell to create fibers. Although not an eco-friendly solution in all cases, bamboo bedding is often remarkably soft and breathable, making it especially suitable for hot sleepers or people who perspire excessively during the night.
The Luxome Bamboo Luxury Sheet Set captures all the desired qualities I look for in a sheet – exceptional softness, breathability, Oeko-Tex certification, and deep pockets with elastic straps for secure and effective bed-making. The set is among the softest I've tried, boasting premium features without the premium price traditionally associated with bamboo sheets.
Whether you're looking for a eco-friendly, soft, and breathable option, consider the Bamboo Sheet Set from Quince ($100). Our testers found it lightweight yet luxurious, with a pleasant feel and resistance to heating up, though it may pill and stain more easily and tends to be slightly thinner compared to competitors in the same price range.
