Strategies for avoiding fines while driving cautiously around schools in the UAE
In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), traffic rules near schools are enforced strictly to ensure the safety of children. The penalties for violations are significant, with fines ranging from AED 300 to AED 700 for exceeding the speed limit, which is usually set between 30 and 40 km/h.
Drivers are advised to stop completely when school buses extend their stop signs, whether approaching from behind or the opposite direction, and maintain at least five metres distance. Ignoring school bus stop signs can lead to a fine of AED 1,000, 10 black points on the driver's license, and potential vehicle impoundment for up to 30 days.
Other rules and penalties include avoiding overtaking in school zones, particularly during drop-off/pick-up times. Illegal parking near schools can result in a fine of AED 500, especially if it blocks traffic or occurs in no-parking zones. Random stopping or parking on the road without justification can incur a fine of AED 1,000 and six black points.
Traffic rule breakers near schools can also face fines for reckless driving or disruptive noise such as horn misuse. All passengers in vehicles must wear seat belts in school zones, with the driver responsible for enforcement.
Authorities have increased patrols, educational signage, and camera enforcement near schools nationwide to improve compliance and safety. These rules are backed by the Federal Traffic and Road Law No. (14) of 2024, demonstrating the UAE's commitment to protecting schoolchildren on roads.
Drivers are also advised to avoid using the horn or revving the engine near schools and school buses. School buses have larger blind spots than regular vehicles, and drivers must come to a complete stop when a school bus halts both behind it and in front of it on a two-way single carriageway.
Loud noises, such as honking or revving engines, near schools and school buses can startle children and create dangerous situations. Emergency lanes should be kept clear, and drivers should stick to the speed limit in school zones.
The Ministry of Interior (MOI) has launched its annual initiative 'A Day Without Accidents', alongside the campaign 'A Safe School Year' in the UAE, starting on August 25, 2025. Common traffic fines during school runs in the UAE include parking in restricted areas, not using designated school pick-up and drop-off points, stopping on the opposite side of the road from a school, using emergency lanes, exceeding the speed limit in school zones, and not stopping for school buses.
Remember, children always have priority in school zones. Drivers should obey school bus stop signs, follow crossing guards' instructions, stay alert, and avoid distractions when driving in or near school zones. Misusing the horn or car sound system in a disruptive way near schools and school buses can lead to a fine of Dh400 and four black points.
By following these rules, we can ensure a safer environment for our children and promote a culture of road safety in the UAE.
