Shark Tank's Gato Café Business

In June 2014, Adriana Montano, a culinary enthusiast with a passion for cats, launched an IndieGoGo campaign to bring Gato Cafe, a unique cat-themed coffee shop, to life. The idea was inspired by a growing trend of cat cafes in Japan and aimed to provide a space where visitors could observe and play with cats for a small fee, all while enjoying a cup of coffee.

Adriana's husband, Michael Meng, joined her in this venture. Together, they planned to open Gato Cafe in Boca Raton, Florida, charging an entrance fee of $9 for visitors to spend time in the cafe, interact with the cats, and have a coffee.

However, the road to reality proved challenging. Despite attracting media attention following her Shark Tank appearance in episode 29 of the sixth season, Gato Cafe was unable to progress beyond the concept stage due to a lack of funding. The IndieGoGo campaign ended in July 2014, having raised only $1,210, far short of the $75,000 goal.

During her pitch, Adriana was accompanied by a group of kittens, which undoubtedly added to the charm of her idea. However, the Sharks, including Lori Greiner, Daymond John, Kevin O'Leary, Robert Herjavec, and Mark Cuban, were not all convinced.

Lori found Adriana's goal of saving and rescuing cats admirable but did not invest in the idea at the moment. Kevin expressed his dislike for cats, ruling out any potential investment. Mark did not express interest in Gato Cafe, and Nick, despite finding the idea cool, did not invest due to the lack of a physical property. Daymond agreed with Lori that Adriana's idea was the right one but needed more than just an idea to succeed.

Gato Cafe is one of the first cat cafes in the US, following in the footsteps of popular Asian and European cat cafes. Other cat cafes in the US include Happy Tabby Cat Cafe, Java Cats Cafe, Cat Town Cafe, Purringtons Cat Lounge, and Eat, Purr, Love.

Unfortunately, Gato Cafe's story is not unique. Adriana's attempts to open a similar cat cafe in the USA, such as Alley Cat Cafe in Ithaca, New York, and several cat cafes in South Carolina, have also faced challenges and remained unrealized.

Despite these setbacks, Adriana's dream of creating a space that combines her love for cats and coffee lives on. Perhaps one day, with the right resources and support, Gato Cafe will become a reality, offering a purr-fect escape for cat lovers everywhere.
