Sessions' Tenure Stalls Five Years On: What Remains To Be Accomplished?

Periodic maintenance is essential for a mechanical clock, much like any machine. While five years might seem excessive compared to the standard 2-3 years between service intervals for a Sessions time and strike mantel clock, we must acknowledge that it hasn't been a straightforward period...

Sessions' Tenure Stalls Five Years On: What Remains To Be Accomplished?

In a fascinating journey of clock repair, a vintage Sessions mantel clock, acquired about a year ago, has just received a much-needed servicing. The clock, which was in excellent condition when purchased for less than $40, has been a significant addition to the owner's collection.

The Sessions Raven clock, with its intricate design, was the first time the owner used their Bergeon bushing machine. The clock's servicing, which has not been done since 2016, was an opportunity for the owner to hone their skills and delve deeper into the intricacies of clock repair.

Upon inspection, it was found that the movement of the clock was dirty and required a thorough cleaning. The oil used in the movement had dried or become contaminated with dust and debris, leading to increased friction and erratic timekeeping. The mainsprings, especially if original and frequently wound, may have weakened, set, or developed set coils, affecting power delivery to the movement and potentially causing timekeeping issues.

The striking mechanism, including hammers, gongs, and levers, required adjustment or cleaning. Misalignment could cause missed strikes, double strikes, or improper hammer fall. The pivots on which the gears turn may have worn their bushings, leading to increased friction, stoppage, or a loss of amplitude in the pendulum swing.

In addition to the movement concerns, the case and dial were checked for damage that could affect operation or aesthetics. The pendulum may need adjustment for proper beat, especially if the clock was handled in transit or reoriented after its last service. Key winding resistance was also assessed, with over-winding or under-winding being a potential issue.

During the current servicing, the owner will inspect all pivots and bushings, particularly the mainspring clicks. A badly kinked suspension spring was noticed, which will require replacement. The fourth bushing on the strike side back-plate of the clock is somewhat oval-shaped, and the owner replaced the bushing on the strike side wheel of the clock.

After broaching, the new bushing fit perfectly. The click and rivet design are a special problem on Sessions clocks, but both clicks are in good condition after 5 years. The pivot on the clock was measured at 1.62mm, and a bushing with an inside diameter of 1.60mm was chosen.

The owner, who had no knowledge about clocks, couldn't provide any information about the clock. However, in 2016, the owner installed 10 bushings, replaced the pendulum bob and suspension spring, oiled the movement, reinstalled it, and refreshed the case. The replacement bushings from 2016 remain in very good condition.

After addressing these issues, the clock runs like a charm. The movement is cleaner and shinier, and the Sessions mantel clock continues to keep accurate time and maintains its classic chime and gong sounds. Regular servicing every 5–10 years is recommended for optimal performance, ensuring that this vintage clock continues to tick and tock for many more years to come.

The owner, in their pursuit of home-and-garden gadgets and technology, acquired a vintage Sessions Raven clock and decided to repair its movement, which had not been serviced since 2016. The restored clock, now polished and running smoothly, complements the owner's lifestyle and contributes to the vintage charm of their home-and-garden décor. For individuals passionate about vintage clocks and clock repair, this Sessions mantel clock serves as an excellent example of the longevity and charm that can be found in these intricate gadgets from a bygone era.
