In the heart of Mainz, Germany, a new proposal is gaining traction, aiming to enhance the urban impact of the city's significant Roman monuments. The idea, known as the "Roman Triangle," suggests visually connecting the Dativius-Victor Arch, the Jubiläumsbrunnen, and the Great Mainz Jupiter Column on the Ernst-Ludwig-Platz.

The Great Mainz Jupiter Column, standing tall at 9.10 meters, is one of the largest Roman artifacts of its kind. Discovered in 1905, a replica of the column was on display in front of the Mainz State Parliament until 2015, when it was dismantled for restoration purposes. However, its return has been delayed due to static issues, requiring extensive geological investigations and static calculations before it can be reinstalled.

The Jubiläumsbrunnen, also erected in 1962, has not been operational for about 15 years. The SPD Mainz-Altstadt proposed a new construction for the Jubiläumsbrunnen in 2022, adding another layer of excitement to the proposed "Roman Triangle."

The Dativius-Victor Arch, a honorary arch from the late Roman period, stands on the other side of the Great Bleiche and was reconstructed in 1900. Standing at 6.50 meters high and 4.55 meters wide, it is considered one of the most significant reconstructed Roman monuments in Germany.

The "Save the Roman" association has proposed moving the Jupiter Column to the other side of the Great Bleiche, creating a "Roman Triangle" with the Dativius-Victor Arch and the Jubilee Fountain. However, the concept of a "Roman Triangle" proposal for a Jupiter Column in Mainz seems to be a relatively recent, obscure concept not yet documented in accessible sources.

In April 2023, the city of Mainz revived the "Forum Regierungsviertel," which aims to develop recommendations for the redesign of the area between the Große Bleiche, the Kurfürsten Schloss, the Landtag, and the State Chancellery of Rhineland-Palatinate. The implementation of the recommendations from the "Forum Regierungsviertel" is still open, and the opportunity to incorporate the "Roman Triangle" proposal could be a significant part of the redesign.

The redesign of the Ernst-Ludwig-Platz has been proposed several times, with ideas including a reconstructed castle park or a "Generations Park," but none have been implemented. The proposed "Roman Triangle" could provide a unique and historically significant solution to the redesign of the Ernst-Ludwig-Platz.

In mid-July 2025, the "Save the Roman" association demanded the swift return of the Jupiter Column. As the city of Mainz continues to assess the static issues and the feasibility of the "Roman Triangle" proposal, the future of these significant Roman monuments in Mainz is eagerly awaited.
