Save Germany's Hedgehogs: Summer Garden Tips

August is shaping up to be a scorcher, posing threats to Germany's already endangered hedgehog population. Simple garden adjustments can safeguard these creatures during the summer months.

Hedgehogs face numerous risks in the heat. Ponds, paddling pools, and drains can trap or drown them. To protect them, cover these areas or build ramps. Additionally, maintain ground-level vegetation for cover and avoid pesticides. Provide water sources and create small passages in fences to enable their movement. Offer sheltered nesting areas, especially during summer when hedgehogs may be caring for small babies. Before gardening, check long grass or under shrubs to avoid disturbing hedgehog families.

With hedgehog populations declining significantly in some countries, up to 75% in the past 20 years, it's crucial to secure garden areas this August. Simple measures can eliminate risks and provide elements to keep hedgehogs healthy and safe during the hot summer months.
