Drifting through Decades: Sea Containers London's Nautical Nostalgia
Sail back to the heyday of ocean liners at Sea Containers London, an iconic revitalization of a former ship.
Experience the joy of voyaging through time as Sea Containers London reinvents itself, celebrating a decade in style. Nestled along London's South Bank, this iconic 1978 structure, formerly the Mondrian Hotel, underwent a makeover in 2019, courtesy of Lore Group, the masterminds behind Pulitzer Amsterdam and Riggs in Washington D.C.
Sailing through the Ages at Sea Containers London
Channeling the building's maritime heritage, Lore Group's creative director, Jacu Strauss, offers a narrative-driven approach to designing the new suites. These time-traveling temporary abodes are inspired by various design periods in cabin history: Edwardian, Art Deco, Mid-century, and 'Dynasty', a nod to 1980s maximalism.
To create an authentic experience, Vinterior, a vintage furniture specialist, was called upon to source pieces that help bring each theme to life. And what a theatrical stay it offers, with playful additions, such as period paintings and deep-sea diver sculptures, ultimately ensuring the nautical charm never sinks.
All suites grace the 15th floor, reflecting an elevated elegance as one emerges from the lift into a red-walled, red-carpeted corridor. Each suite's door tells a tale with thoughtfully selected hardware and embellishments hinting at the design era within.
The suites, spanning approximately 47 sq m, boast a generous living room with a kitchenette, a king-size bedroom, a marble bathroom with a separate powder room, and an additional toilet. Marvel at the panoramic views over the River Thames while enjoying the complimentary in-room champagne breakfast. Perks also include a well-stocked minibar, Laurent-Perrier, gourmet snacks, and complimentary tickets to the in-house Curzon cinema on select evenings.
Bask in the Opulence of the Art Deco Cabin Suite
The Art Deco Cabin Suite invokes the streamlined elegance of the 1930s, with glossy lacquer and burl wood that exudes the confidence and structured style characteristic of the period. Deep neutral tones and brass finishes complete this stunning lambda of the roaring '20s.
Marvel at the Victorian Flair of the Edwardian Cabin Suite
The Edwardian Cabin Suite draws upon the luxurious grandeur of the early 20th century, boasting standout vintage pieces like an antique mahogany kidney desk. The design embraces rich greens, dark wood finishes, traditional wall panelling, heavy textiles, and period artworks to create an authentic Edwardian ambiance.
Embrace the Simplicity of the Mid-century Modern Cabin Suite
The Mid-century Modern Cabin Suite captures the essence of the 1950s and 1960s with its clean silhouettes, sleek lines, and minimal ornamentation. Warm wood floors, soft pastel accents, and the clean lines of USM Haller furniture help transport guests to a simpler time.
Indulge in the Excessive Glamour of the Dynasty Cabin Suite
Harkening back to the flamboyant 1980s, the Dynasty Cabin Suite features mirrored surfaces, glass accents, flashes of gold, and a reupholstered Maralunga sofa by Vico Magistretti. Bold colors and luxurious fabrics evoke the decadent glamour of this era, while elements like lucite and glass coffee tables and Grecian-style plinths throwback to the era's exuberant style.
