Role of Calamity Jane offers a multifaceted portrayal
In August 2025, the stage adaptation of the classic musical, Calamity Jane, will make its way to Dublin's Bord Gaís Energy Theatre. The production, starring three-time WhatsOnStage Best Actress in a Musical winner Carrie Hope Fletcher, promises to be a feel-good show that leaves the audience with a smile on their face.
Fletcher, who has previously performed at Bord Gaís Energy Theatre in 2017 in The Addams Family, will take on the title role of Calamity Jane. For the actress, this role is her favourite in her career, as she shared in an interview, "Calamity Jane has everything – a love story, comedy, slapstick, action, dance, and a variety of costumes. It's a role that truly showcases the breadth of my abilities as a performer."
The Calamity Jane tour has received an incredible response in the UK, and Dublin audiences are eagerly anticipating the performance. The show features all the classic songs from Calamity Jane, including The Deadwood Stage (Whip-Crack-Away), The Black Hills of Dakota, Just Blew in from the Windy City, and Secret Love.
While the stage and film versions of Calamity Jane differ notably in their songs and character portrayals, the stage adaptation offers both homage and innovation. The stage character is described as whip-smart, sassy, and gun-toting, with a plucky spirit. Fletcher deliberately avoids imitating Doris Day's legendary performance to create her own unique take on Calamity Jane, recognizing that no one can quite match Day’s original "magic."
The stage version includes a couple of songs that were not featured in the original Doris Day film, as well as some new elements for audiences familiar with the movie. The show retains core plot elements but updates for inclusivity and gender balance, including new scenes and songs.
Carrie Hope Fletcher has had a successful career in musical theatre, writing books, making films, recording albums, and raising a child. Despite her busy schedule, she is excited to bring Calamity Jane to Dublin. However, she confessed that her daughter, who does not settle in new environments and does not sleep well, may pose a challenge during the run of the show.
The Calamity Jane run at Bord Gaís Energy Theatre will take place from August 19-23, 2025, and tickets are available through Ticketmaster.ie. Don't miss this opportunity to see Carrie Hope Fletcher in this iconic role and experience the magic of Calamity Jane on stage.
