Readers' Emails: The Eaglets of Big Bear Stirred Heartfelt Admiration, Sparking Calls for More Encounters

Open Letter to the Editor:

It's bloomin' time for Sunny and Gizmo to bid adieu to their nest and the striking couple, Jackie and Shadow ("Catching a glimpse of the Big Bear eagle family's growth spurt," May 13). These fledgling eagles, who became our titillating tabloid stars with their own webcam reality show, might just be yearning for some peace after their fame-laden lives.

Once they spread their wings, Jackie and Shadow may embrace a change with a boarder to chip in on the rent, or they could dive headfirst into the parenting whirlwind once more with a fresh batch of eaglets. The question remains if they'd be game to give us the inside scoop on their lives again. Here's hoping so.

Response to the Loss of Species and Victory of Survival:

Despite the gloomy fate facing numerous bird species due to habitat woes, pollution, and pesticides, it's a blissful relief to celebrate the Big Bear eagle family's success. Their triumph serves as a beacon of hope after suffering the heartbreak of losing some hatchlings, shared by us willy-nilly.

It's fascinating to learn that these parental eagles shall, for a time, accompany their young eaglets in the pursuit of food, ensuring they learn the ways of the wild. Even a juvenile bald eagle has a steep battle to survive, with only a 50% chance of making it through its first painful year in the wild. Life, as we know it, remains brutally fragile for these creatures, and we must respect and honor that.

Kudos to the L.A. Times:

I'd like to extend a heartfelt compliment to the L.A. Times for continuing their captivating reports on our beloved local eagle family. The prospect of watching them grow gives me a much-needed jolt of excitement, and I sincerely hope that when these fledglings take flight, they stick around and bolster the bald eagle population.
