1. Soil Testing Begin by testing your soil to determine its pH level and nutrient content. You can obtain a soil test kit from your local extension office or garden center, or use a soil pH meter for quick readings. Knowing your soil’s current pH is essential because it influences hydrangea bloom color and health.

2. Digging and Removing Existing Soil When planting, dig a hole about 15–18 inches deep and remove the native soil completely. This allows you to create an optimal soil mix tailored to hydrangeas’ needs.

3. Soil Amendments Hydrangeas thrive in moisture-retentive yet well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Amend the planting hole with a mixture of peat moss, potting soil, and pine mulch or compost to improve soil structure and nutrient availability. These amendments help retain moisture and provide nutrients without waterlogging roots.

4. Adjusting Soil pH for Desired Bloom Color - To produce blue flowers, the soil must be acidic (pH below 6.0). Lower soil pH by adding sulfur or incorporating peat moss. Aluminum availability, which enhances blue coloration, is better in acidic soils. - To produce pink flowers, the soil must be alkaline (pH above 7.0). Raise soil pH by adding lime (calcium carbonate). Note that hydrangeas like H. macrophylla respond to soil pH changes, but white varieties do not change color with soil chemistry. Adjusting soil pH can take several months and requires ongoing monitoring with soil tests every year or so to maintain the desired level.

5. Planting and Aftercare Plant the hydrangea root ball level with the soil surface and backfill with amended soil. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil and provide moisture. Creating a small soil mound around the plant can protect roots and improve drainage.
