Onion square record shattered by Niederbieber, Melpers applauded for achieving a remarkable 2.94 meters

In the heart of Germany, the picturesque Rhön region recently witnessed an extraordinary culinary event. The small village of Hessian Niederbieber has claimed the title of baking the longest onion pie, measuring an impressive 2.94 meters.

The record-breaking pie was the result of a friendly competition initiated by the Melpersians, a community known for their own impressive onion pie. The Melpersians heartily congratulated Niederbieber but hinted at breaking the record next year, setting the stage for an ongoing gastronomic rivalry within the Rhön region.

The Melpers community publicly challenged other Rhön communities to beat their record, and it seemed that Niederbieber was more than up to the task. A bus filled with 20 Melpersians, which is a fifth of the village, traveled to Niederbieber for the baking house festival to witness the pie-making spectacle.

Rainer Kremer from Niederbieber took up the challenge to see if the record still stood. The new record pie was made with cream and sour cream, surpassing the previous record of 2.70 meters set in Thuringian Melpers. The pie was lifted onto a specially modified cart, and the Melpersian group praised the similarity of the pie to their own.

The final measurement confirmed that Niederbieber's pie is indeed 2.94 meters long, securing the title. The Rhön region enjoys its traditions and friendly competition, and this event is a testament to that spirit.

The idea for the baking competition originated last year during the collection of firewood for the baking house festival in Melpers. An appeal has been made to all Rhön communities to participate in the pie competition, with the trophy to be passed on to the next community participating in the event.

Despite initial uncooperative weather, the festival cleared up, allowing hundreds of guests to form a line to get a piece of the new record pie. As the Rhön region continues to celebrate its rich traditions, it's safe to say that the longest onion pie competition is here to stay.
