Nestled on the coast of Discovery Bay, this wooden abode promises a tranquil lakeside escape
Article: A Stunning Timber Residence in Discovery Bay
Nestled on a secluded, steep, and dramatic waterside plot 40 miles from downtown Seattle, the Discovery Bay house stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of mathematics and nature. Designed by Dekleva Gregorič Architects, this 325 sq m, rectilinear structure boasts a visually austere design accentuated by vertical cedar wood cladding, stained with a dark varnish, arranged in a non-standard pattern to mimic tree trunks.
The main living area of the house is a double-height space, with a library mezzanine that adds an air of sophistication. The Douglas fir beams, serving both as structure and frame, set up views inside and outside the home, creating a seamless connection between the indoors and the outdoors. Sunlight filters through tree canopies, adding another layer of shifting dynamics to the facade.
The services and utilities are housed in a separate narrow pavilion that serves as the main entrance. Above the concrete podium, the entire house is built of wood, with birch plywood panels used for floors, walls, and ceilings. These panels are finished in two different stains, light grey and charcoal brown, to visually separate areas of the home.
The house's design reflects a duality: a mathematically precise home deeply connected to the organic world it inhabits. The client, with a background in the Californian entertainment industry, sought a residence that would embody this harmony. Interestingly, this is not the first collaboration between the client and Dekleva Gregorič Architects; their previous project was an Ebay ocean-front house in Maui.
The guest suite is located on an upper floor, providing separation from the client and visitors. The guest suite on the ground floor, located at the opposite end of the home from the client's rooms, offers privacy and comfort for visitors. The fenestration is set up to maximize cross-ventilation and bring natural light into the heart of the home, with many key rooms having dual aspects.
The use of renewably sourced timber significantly reduces the carbon footprint, making the Discovery Bay house not only a visual masterpiece but also an environmentally conscious choice. This innovative design by Dekleva Gregorič Architects, based in Slovenia and predominantly working in the EU and the USA, is a shining example of how architecture can bridge the gap between mathematical precision and organic beauty.
