Mino-Ware Temporary Retail Space Unveiled for Public Interaction
In the heart of Los Angeles, a unique pop-up shop is currently running, offering a curated selection of stylish ceramic donburi bowls. This special event is a collaboration between Yamasan-Miyake, a renowned donburi producer with over 20 years of experience, and TOIRO, a Los Angeles-based Japanese kitchen and tableware store.
The pop-up shop features hand-crafted ceramic bowls from Mino, Gifu prefecture, a region known for its rich history in pottery. Mino-yaki pottery, dating back to the 9th century, has played a significant role in Japanese tableware production, accounting for about 60% of the nationwide market share.
One of the standout pieces in the collection is the Hai-Yu Nagomi Donburi Bowl, available for purchase at $48. This bowl, like all the others, is manufactured in a small-lot process, ensuring attention to each individual piece. The Akadami-Karakusa Donburi Bowl, priced at $59, features a traditional hand-painted arabesque design. Both the standard and shallow wide versions of the Akadami-Karakusa Donburi Bowls are available, priced at $93 and $93 respectively.
The Oribe-Kakiwake Nagomi Donburi Bowl, available in both green and black versions, is priced at $53. Another offering is the Yaki-Shime Sogi Donburi Bowl, available for $60, and the Oribe Sogi Donburi Bowl, available for the same price.
It's important to note that the Akadami-Karakusa Donburi Bowls are not microwave-safe, not dishwasher safe, and should be hand washed. They are also not suitable for direct heat sources and could crack if exposed to sharp temperature changes. Food should not be stored in the Akadami-Karakusa Donburi Bowls, as the porous clay could absorb the moisture and smell of the contents over time.
Yamasan-Miyake believes that the overall enjoyment of a dish comes not only from the taste and aroma, but also from the vessel in which it is served. This philosophy is reflected in the careful craftsmanship of each bowl, which combines tradition and modernity.
The exhibition "The Art of the Ramen Bowl" is also running, offering visitors a deeper insight into the history and significance of these traditional ceramics. A related culinary program called "Ramen Discoveries" is also being offered, allowing participants to explore the world of ramen in a unique and immersive way.
