Memorial Event: Complimentary Guided Tours of Harburg City Hall

The historic Harburg Town Hall will be opening its doors for three free guided tours as part of the Day of Open Heritage, taking place from September 6 to 8.

For those interested, there will be two professional tours for adults on September 6 at 9:30 AM and 12:00 PM, each lasting approximately 90 minutes. A family tour is also scheduled for September 6 at 3:00 PM. These tours will provide visitors with an exciting journey through the history of the Harburg Town Hall.

The Harburg Town Hall, completed in 1892 according to the designs of architect Christoph Hehl, boasts a magnificent facade divided into a projecting central section and two smaller side risers, showcasing the Flemish Renaissance architectural style.

Visitors will be led through the Town Hall, starting with the Great Hall, adorned with historic stained-glass windows. The tour will also cover the representative staircase and the present-day Town Hall Square.

During the family tour, the story of the Countess of Harburg will be told in the large meeting room, and the tour will lead visitors under the roof where the clockwork of the tower clock is located. The family tour is specifically inviting families to take a peek behind the scenes of the Harburg Town Hall.

The Harburg Town Hall was rebuilt after World War II, replacing the original city hall that was too small for the administrative tasks of Harburg and was built on the Sand.

Registration for these tours must be done by email to [email protected] by September 4. Please note that the family tour has limited spaces.

For those seeking more information or registration details for specific events during the Day of Open Heritage, it is recommended to check the official Harburg district or Hamburg city website events calendar close to the event date, contact local cultural heritage organizations hosting the Day of Open Heritage, or Hamburg tourism offices.
