"Madara Kvepa's art exhibition, titled 'The Sea is Silent, Yet I Return', is now on display at the ISSP Gallery in Riga"
Madara Kvepa, a visual artist from Latvia, is set to exhibit her latest work at the ISSP Gallery at Berga Bazārs. The exhibition, titled "The Sea is Silent, Yet I Return", will run from August 8 to September 19, 2023.
Kvepa's work is a testament to her encounters with nature, as she documents her interactions with pine trees, stones, wind, tides, algae, and sand through analogue photography and diary entries. The exhibition centres on ecological sensitivity, exploring the formation of relationships with nature through its elements, rhythms, and silences.
The artistic research and concept focus on attuning to the subtle interactions between humans and the natural world, emphasizing the quiet but profound connections with ecological processes. The exhibition investigates how these relationships shape awareness and responsiveness to the environment, inviting reflection on natural cycles and the often overlooked or silent dimensions of the sea and nature at large.
By engaging with nature’s rhythms and silences, Kvepa presents a nuanced dialogue about ecological presence and the imperative of fostering sensitivity to the environment’s fragile balance. The exhibition also addresses the impact of climate change on Latvia's coastal landscape.
The scenography for the exhibition is designed by Ieva Stalšene, and the opening event will take place on August 7 at 6 PM. The evening will be enriched by a special sound and music performance, 'Hearing the Sea Speak', created for the exhibition by Reinis Semēvics and Michael Holland.
Madara Kvepa (1996) is a visual artist currently pursuing a professional doctoral degree at the Art Academy of Latvia. She has held ten solo exhibitions to date, including her solo show 'Vesels' at the 2021 Cēsis Art Festival. Her most recent solo exhibition was 'Field Studies in Ancestral Memory' at the gallery Myymälä2 in Helsinki, Finland (2023).
The current exhibition is curated by Liāna Ivete Žilde and is supported by Riga City Council, the State Culture Capital Foundation, and VPT Grupa. On September 6 from 17:00 to 23:00, as part of the White Night cultural programme, visitors will have the chance to experience the exhibition together with the artist.
Don't miss this opportunity to immerse yourself in Kvepa's thought-provoking exploration of our relationship with nature. The ISSP Gallery at Berga Bazārs is hosting this solo exhibition, and it promises to be an unforgettable experience for all who attend.
