London's oldest food hall, Borough Market, welcomes its new leader
Alistair Maddox, a seasoned hospitality professional with over 20 years of experience, has been appointed as the new CEO of Borough Market, one of London's oldest and most beloved food markets. Maddox, who previously served as Director of Brixton Village’s market arcades and played an integral role in the reestablishment of Broadway Market, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role.
Maddox's appointment comes following Jane Swift's resignation earlier in 2025. He joins Borough Market alongside Nicole Casey, who has been appointed as the director of operations. Casey will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the market, working with over 100 independent traders.
The team of Maddox and Casey is described as "strong" and "values-led". Borough Market, which operates six days a week and attracts 20 million visitors annually, is known for its TikTok-friendly spots like The Black Pig and Humble Crumble, as well as classic stalls like Richard Haward's oysters.
Maddox's vision for Borough Market is to continue building on its legacy as more than just a collection of food stalls, but a vibrant community. He aims to champion small businesses, sustainability, and education as core values of the market. Maddox believes Borough Market creates a platform for small businesses to thrive and champions sustainability and education.
Shane Holland, Borough Market's chair of trustees, is thrilled to welcome Maddox and Casey to Borough Market. "We are delighted to have Alistair and Nicole join us at Borough Market," Holland said. "Their combined experience and commitment to our core values make them perfectly placed to guide Borough Market through its next strategic phase."
Maddox considers it an honor to lead Borough Market, a trusted institution. "I am thrilled to be joining Borough Market," Maddox said. "It's a privilege to lead such a respected and vibrant community, and I'm looking forward to working with the team to develop Borough Market as a cultural and culinary landmark while maintaining its rich heritage and focusing on future growth and innovation."
Established in 1756, Borough Market is run by a charitable trust with a board of volunteer trustees responsible for the estate. The market's goal is to achieve this while maintaining its charitable purpose. Maddox's background in hospitality and market leadership, combined with his commitment to sustainability and community, make him well positioned to lead Borough Market through its next phase of growth and innovation.
