Local Cascais Businesses Urge Community Support: Shop Local
Getting Your Portion of 'Made in Portugal' Goods Made Easy
Stepping into the quaint shop nestled on the lesser-known Pocço Novo Road in the bustling Visconde da Luz commercial center feels like stepping into a treasure trove. This gem, affectionately named A Nova Vida, is the brainchild of a passionate Aussie entrepreneur who aims to bridge the gap between local artisans and the general shopping scene.
" Portugal boasts a flourishing reserve of creativity," claims Kirsty Boazman, the mastermind behind this novel venture. "However, it's an unfortunate reality that many of these creative enterprises are solitary laboratories of passion, struggling to find a platform to sell their creations."
In 2023, over 390,000 micro or small businesses swayed the economic pendulum of Portugal, leading the employment and real value growth within the national economy. Yet, as Kirsty rightly points out, these small fry often face daunting challenges when it comes to opening retail outlets.
Realizing the need of the hour, Kirsty has created a sanctuary for three such artisans to display and sell their wares. The shop is rented out on a flexible one-month basis, eliminating the hefty commitments and financial burdens associated with long-term lease agreements – a decision that could prove instrumental in kicking off a fledgling enterprise.
"Primarily, this is a mission without personal gain," says Kirsty. "My aim is to aid fledgling local creators in realizing their dreams of reaching a wider audience and peddling their designs to tourists eager to pack their bags with 'Made in Portugal' souvenirs."
At the moment, A Nova Vida showcases the charming seaside-inspired necklaces conjured by local jeweler and former educator Teresa Lemos. This seaside hub is also Cascais's premiere consignment store for top-tier second-hand clothing.
"Second-hand clothing stores have become a popular and booming craze across many countries, a magnet for nomads in search of unique wardrobe additions. I suspect that there are some hidden wardrobe gems in the greater Cascais region ready to find a new lease on life at A Nova Vida," shares Kirsty.
