Lifeblood Lux: Initial Stage Concluded Ahead of Schedule – 2026
The "Lebensader Lux" project, a significant urban development initiative, is making steady progress in transforming Luxembourg Street into a more attractive and livable space. This project is part of a special program "City and Country" of the Federal Government and the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the State of NRW.
The first phase of construction was completed in October 2024, and the second phase, from Horbeller Street to house number 315, is currently underway. By June 2025, this phase will have all main supply lines laid and the roadway renewed. The third phase, from house number 315 to the AOK Street, is scheduled to be completed by July 2025.
The project aims to create a traffic-calmed zone with greenery and high stay quality on Luxembourg Street. Intersections will become two roundabouts, the intermediate section will be designated as a cycle street, and the permitted maximum speed will be reduced to 30 km/h. Ancillary facilities such as sidewalks, garden cabins, new power and water lines, fiber optic cables, and the renewal of house connections will be built by February 2026. By early 2026, the sidewalks between Horbeller Street and AOK Street will be passable again without barriers.
Property owners can apply for free connections to the district heating supply and a fiber optic connection before the paving work is completed. For district heating, contact 02233 / 53-600 or visit
The project receives funding of 7,971,413 euros from the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building, and the NRW Ministry for Home Affairs, Communities, Building and Digitalization. Additional funding in the amount of 171,600 euros is provided for the planned cycle street from the Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport and the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM).
The "Lebensader Lux" project is a collaborative effort, with funding from various government ministries and departments. The Federal Ministry for Digital Affairs and Transport and the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM) are project bearers for the special program "City and Country" of the Federal Government and the Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of the State of NRW.
