Let's head to the local market of second-hand goods?
In the heart of our region, flea markets continue to thrive, offering a unique shopping experience for bargain hunters. These vibrant marketplaces, despite their name, are much cleaner and more hygienic compared to their 19th-century counterparts[1]. The term "flea market" originates from the French phrase "Marché aux Puces," meaning "market of fleas." This name was likely given due to the markets where secondhand goods were sold, often infested with fleas[2].
Historically, the "Marché aux Puces" in Paris, known as one of the largest and oldest flea markets, has been operating since the Middle Ages. The name reflects both the flea-infested conditions originally associated with the market and the trade in used, often antique, goods[3].
This weekend, our region is bustling with several flea markets, providing ample opportunities for bargain hunting. On Saturday, July 26, 2025, the Flea Market Braunschweig Metro can be found at Dieselstraße, operating from 7 am to 4 pm. For those who prefer a Sunday shopping spree, there are several options. The Food & Fashion Flea Market takes place at the Restaurant, Café and Beer Garden "Zur Freundschaft," Georg-Westermann-Allee 36 in Braunschweig, from 12 pm to 5 pm.
Meanwhile, the Flea Market in Wenden is scheduled for Sunday, July 27, 2025, at XXXLutz, Wendenmühle 5, from 11 am to 5 pm. Another large flea market in Velpke is held at Schützenplatz in Velpke on the same day, from 6 am to 4 pm.
It's worth noting that the large crowds at flea markets in the early 19th century contributed to the spread of fleas from person to person[1]. However, today's flea markets are a far cry from their flea-ridden past, offering a fun and clean shopping experience for all.
So, whether you're on the hunt for a hidden gem or simply enjoy the atmosphere of a bustling market, our region's flea markets are the perfect destination this weekend.
