Leipzig's 'Let's Play Climate Adaptation' Project Leaves Lasting Digital Participation Legacy
The 'Let's play Climate Adaptation' model project successfully concluded after nearly two years, leaving a lasting impact on digital participation and climate adaptation in Leipzig. The project's digital participation game, 'CityGameSpace', saw over 1,292 game starts and around 100-150 objects placed per round. Citizens enthusiastically engaged in redesigning the southern Bauhofstraße virtually, incorporating climate-adapted elements like streetlights, trees, and shrubs. The game ran from May to July 2025 and provided valuable experiences in digital participation, culminating in an open-source-based tool for other cities. Workshops with around 100 students from various schools, including the Gerda-Taro-Schule in Leipzig, supplemented the online participation. These workshops helped participants recognize new connections between climate, space, and utilization conflicts. The project's success was evident in the diverse designs that resulted in better resistance to heat and heavy rain in simulations. The closing event on September 29, 2025, saw around 30 guests in attendance. The 'Let's play Climate Adaptation' project has left a significant legacy in Leipzig. It has fostered digital participation, provided an open-source tool for other cities, and raised awareness about climate adaptation among both citizens and students. The project's impact can still be seen in the city's ongoing climate adaptation activities, such as the 'Führung auf dem Solar-Gründach der Gerda-Taro-Schule' during Leipzig's 'Week of Climate Adaptation' in 2025.
