Landmark in Scotland changes hands to advance revitalization initiatives
In a significant development, North Lanarkshire Council has acquired The Centre Cumbernauld, the heart of Scotland's Cumbernauld town centre. This acquisition marks the beginning of a multi-million pound regeneration programme aimed at transforming the town centre's role in the community.
Cllr Jim Logue, the council's leader, described this investment as a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity. The regeneration plans encompass a focus on sustainable urban living and aim to redesign Cumbernauld as a fast-growing, experience-based, and adaptive town centre.
The shopping centre, The Centre Cumbernauld, will continue to operate as a shopping mall for a number of years. However, key services and facilities such as The Tryst, the library, and town centre offices are being considered for major redevelopment.
A robust engagement programme with existing businesses and town centre users will be part of the regeneration programme. The consultation will focus on co-designing the town centre based on community needs and the approved vision.
Gatehouse Property Management Limited has been appointed to manage the property on behalf of the council. Once redeveloped, key services and facilities will be incorporated, with the council working closely with partners and town centre users.
Facilities may transfer to a new state-of-the-art hub as part of the redevelopment programme. A new multi-purpose hub is part of the regeneration plans for Cumbernauld.
The UK Levelling Up Fund provided £9.2m for the acquisition and regeneration plans. The masterplan designs for the town centre will be reviewed and further developed.
However, housing experts and councillors expressed concerns at the UKREiiF conference in May that Levelling Up plans should ideally progress within a two-year timeframe. Cllr Logue stated that the wider regeneration plans will take a number of years to bring to fruition.
The organization that will manage the shopping centre in Cumbernauld after the renovation is LaSalle Investment Management. The regeneration plans for Cumbernauld's town centre aim to create a more vibrant, sustainable, and community-focused space, enhancing the quality of life for its residents and visitors.
