Knife manufacturer TOPS streamlines its El Chete model, transforming it into a versatile outdoor and EDC-compatible fixed blade knife.
The TOPS Knives El Chete Mini is a compact version of the popular El Chete knife, designed for everyday carry (EDC) needs. This versatile knife, created by renowned blade designer and TOPS president, Leo Espinoza, is a happy accident stemming from a wooden Christmas ornament.
The El Chete Mini maintains a significant blade stock thickness, making it a proficient cutting and chopping tool. Despite its smaller size, it spans 8.75" in total, making it 2/3rds smaller than the original El Chete, and weighs 5.4oz without the sheath, and 7.5oz with the sheath.
The El Chete Mini is ideal for a variety of tasks:
Everyday Carry Applications
- Utility Cutting: The El Chete Mini can be used for everyday cutting tasks such as opening packages, cutting rope, or any other small-scale utility work.
- Outdoor Activities: It is ideal for camping, hiking, or backpacking due to its lightweight and compact design, making it easy to include in a backpack or on a belt.
- Food Preparation: Although not the primary focus, it can be used for minor food preparation tasks in a survival or camping context.
- Self-Defense: In a self-defense situation, its compact size and sturdy construction make it a capable tool.
- Utility Tasks Around the Home: The knife can be used for minor cutting tasks around the house or garden, such as pruning small branches or opening boxes.
The El Chete Mini's handle is made of grippy, textured canvas Micarta scales, featuring a bow drill divot, a notch for the trigger and middle fingers, and a notch for the pinky. The knife comes with a black, custom-fitted hard KYDEX sheath and a clip that can be oriented vertically or horizontally.
The El Chete Mini's blade is 5.50" long and is made of 1095 carbon steel with a hardness of 56 to 58 HRC. The knife is a fixed blade, and the blade stock is around 25% thinner than the original's, at 0.19".
The El Chete Mini, like the original, is manufactured in America. It is currently available for purchase, and customers can upgrade options such as a camo blade finish, blade serrations, or a Rocky Mountain Tread pattern on the Micarta scales. These upgrades are done in a made-to-order capacity. The El Chete Mini is priced at $185.
