Impulsive purchase of an auction clock

In the bustling world of online estate auctions, a Nova Scotia resident has recently made an intriguing acquisition. The individual, who frequently follows for-sale and estate auction sites, stumbled upon a unique find—the E. Ingraham Grecian shelf clock.

The Grecian, as it is known, was bought in early January 2021 through an online auction. Surprisingly, it was not from one of the two local estate auction houses in Nova Scotia, but from an online auction studio. The reserve bid for the clock was set at $75, a price that the individual was more than willing to pay.

Upon receiving the Grecian, the individual was pleased to find that it was in better condition than expected. Measuring 14 inches tall by 10 1/4 wide and 5 3/4 inches deep, the antique walnut bracket style mantel clock boasts a polished brass outer dial and a mellow tone chime. Although the brass movement has no makers marks, experts suspect that it might be German, possibly made by the Hamburg American Clock Company (HAC), a prominent manufacturer of antique style clocks during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Hamburg American Clock Company is renowned for its high-quality mantel clocks, characterized by ornate walnut wood cases and mechanical movements. These clocks are sought after by collectors for their aesthetic and historical value, serving as examples of cultural and industrial exchange between Europe and America.

Interestingly, the individual also purchased a second clock from the same auction house in February 2021. This auction house, which specializes in art and Canadiana, occasionally offers clocks, making it a preferred choice for the individual.

The individual plans to restore the case and dial of the E. Ingraham Grecian shelf clock, hoping to preserve its charm and enhance its value. The individual has sold a few clocks locally in the past year and is optimistic about the future of their latest acquisition.

In a recent small staycation, the individual travelled 3 hours to pick up the E. Ingraham Grecian shelf clock. Despite the distance, the individual considers this auction house to be the better one, offering a unique selection of premium items. The E. Ingraham Grecian shelf clock, with its distinctive design and potential German origin, is sure to be a cherished addition to the individual's collection.

With the second acquisition from the same online auction studio in February 2021, the individual has expanded their vintage clocks collection, setting a new direction for their lifestyle. This unique find, the E. Ingraham Grecian shelf clock, adds a touch of elegance to the home-and-garden, blending seamlessly with the fashion-and-beauty aesthetics of the individual's space.
