Impressionist Museum in Giverny Celebrates Summer Amidst Garden and Unconventional Ideologies
In the heart of France, the Musée des impressionnismes in Giverny is hosting a daring summer program from July 11 to November 2, 2025. The exhibition, titled "Andrea Branzi, the reign of the living", is a retrospective celebrating the Italian designer who passed away in 2023.
Andrea Branzi (1938–2023) was a highly influential architect, designer, and artist, renowned for his work that often blurred boundaries between living spaces, natural environments, and cultural contexts. His creations transcend simple functionalism to embody philosophical and ecological concerns, setting him apart in contemporary design.
The exhibition takes place in several rooms and offers a renewed reading of the garden as a space for meditation, inspiration, and existential wandering. One of Branzi's series, Animali domestici (1984-1985), illustrates this alchemy between nature and industry, with a surprising bestiary of hybrid furniture, metallic tapestries, translucent vases, and models of totemic installations.
Branzi's central concept, the "second nature," finds a particular echo in Giverny, the mythical garden shaped by Claude Monet. Branzi considered Monet a "brother" and saw Giverny as a "natural architecture" that serves as a model of hospitality for all forms of life.
The exhibition also features works by other artists, including Blanche Hoschedé-Monet, Ker-Xavier Roussel, Mary Wheeler, James Tissot, Philippe Smit, and Jean Gaumy. Gaumy captures Monet's garden with the simplicity of an iPhone, resulting in black and white images that reveal a vibrant and living "vegetal and aquatic tangle."
Branzi is also presenting Bamboo Interior Wood (2023) to be exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in 2024. This piece, like his other works, embodies his focus on form as an expression of cultural and intellectual ideas rather than mere utility.
The museum also celebrates the centenary of Joan Mitchell with La Grande Vallée IX, a monumental diptych where nature unleashes in a whirlwind of colors.
