Historic Leipzig Cemetery, Johannisfriedhof, Preserves 30 Years of History + Video
The Old Johannisfriedhof, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Leipzig, Germany, is a historic cemetery that holds significant cultural and historical value. Established in the 13th century, it initially served as the burial ground for those who died in the nearby Johannishospital.
In the 16th century, Duke George issued an order forbidding burials within the city, and the Old Johannisfriedhof became Leipzig's main cemetery. Over the centuries, it became the final resting place for many notable Leipzigers, including artists, musicians, and intellectuals.
The cemetery is renowned for its funerary art and monuments, which offer insight into Leipzig's social and cultural history. However, due to urban development, the cemetery is surprisingly small for a city like Leipzig. Parts of it were cut off during the widening of Prager Straße and Taubenweg, and some sections have been replaced by modern structures like the Gutenberg school and the (New) GRASSI Museum.
The Old Johannisfriedhof was replaced by the New Johannisfriedhof in the 19th century. Not every gravestone stands where the grave once was in the Old Johannisfriedhof, as some have been relocated from the New Johannisfriedhof. Only a few plaques help locate the remaining graves of those buried in the Old Johannisfriedhof.
The cemetery had to be closed to the public due to advancing decay in 1981. However, 30 years ago, the city became seriously committed to preserving the remaining gravestones from the Old and New Johannisfriedhofs. Today, around 400 gravestones can still be seen on the remaining cemetery, along with 58 of the original 120 in a section set up as a lapidarium.
The Old Johannisfriedhof is often hidden and requires knowledge of its location and hours to access. It is primarily a cemetery, but its tranquil atmosphere and historical significance make it a unique and peaceful place to visit.
