Handmade Pillows Crafted from Fabric and Yarn: Simple Pumpkin Shape Design
Want to add a touch of autumn charm to your home this Halloween? Look no further than this easy-to-follow guide for crafting a pumpkin-shaped throw pillow with Halloween fabric. This project is perfect for beginners and doesn't require expert sewing abilities.
Materials
- Orange or fall-coloured fabric (e.g., faux sherpa, cotton, or fleece), about 3/4 yard
- Polyester fiberfill stuffing
- Large upholstery needle or sharp sewing needle
- Yarn, jute twine, or embroidery thread (for pumpkin "ribbing" and stem details)
- Fabric marker or pen
- Fabric scissors
- Hot glue gun or fabric glue (optional)
- Rubber band (optional)
Steps
- Cut fabric into a circle Fold your fabric with right sides together. Use a string tied to a pen as a compass to draw a half circle on the folded edge, then cut along the curve through both layers to create a full circle when unfolded. Size depends on your desired pillow size.
- Sew and gather the top edge Thread your needle with strong yarn or thread and sew a running stitch around the edge of the fabric circle. Pull the thread slightly to gather the edges, creating the basic pumpkin shape.
- Stuff the pumpkin Fill the gathered fabric pouch with polyester fiberfill until it is plump and round.
- Close the opening and shape the pumpkin Pull the thread tightly to close the circle completely and knot securely. Optionally use a rubber band to help keep it closed tightly.
- Add pumpkin ridges Thread your yarn or twine onto the needle and stitch from the top to the bottom of the stuffed pumpkin multiple times around, creating the characteristic ridged segments.
- Create the stem Wrap yarn or twine to form a stem and secure it on top of the pumpkin with hot glue or by sewing.
This method yields a soft, cozy pumpkin-shaped throw pillow perfect for fall or Halloween decor. Alternatively, you can crochet a pumpkin pillow with yarn for a textured look, but the fabric method is faster and beginner-friendly.
If you want a quick no-sew version, you can also use an orange pillow cover and attach a Jack O’ Lantern face cut from black peel-and-stick felt (but this is different from making a pumpkin-shaped pillow).
Once finished, your plush pumpkins can be used as outdoor pillows, decorative throw pillows, seasonal displays, or boho additions to the dining room table. Enjoy creating your own Halloween-themed pumpkin-shaped throw pillow!
[1] For a more precise circular cut, measure and cut a piece of yarn equal to the desired radius of the fabric circle. [5] Craft the stem of the pumpkin-shaped pillow using stem-shaped felt. [6] Craft the stem of the Halloween pillow by applying hot glue along a 2-inch edge of stem-shaped felt, rolling it, and securing the other end with additional hot glue. [7] The length of the yarn should be adjusted based on the desired size of the pumpkin throw pillow. [8] Allow the stem to dry for 15 minutes before trimming it to the desired length and affixing it to the pumpkin decor pillow top using hot glue. [9] Pull thread as tight as possible and secure it with a knot at the end, without cutting the thread. [10] Pull basting stitches loosely to create a cup shape in the fabric. [11] The fabric is folded in half and a half-circle is marked with the yarn-tied marker. [12] Cover the bottom of the pumpkin with a small fabric circle using hot glue.
This DIY project is a great way to incorporate a touch of autumn charm into your home lifestyle with a unique homemade pumpkin-shaped throw pillow. The home-and-garden endeavor is designed to create a cozy, plush décor accessory for fall or Halloween, perfect for various room arrangements.
