Preparing a Bed for Your Strawberry Transplants
Strawberries worship rich soil with plenty of compost and decent drainage. They fancy sandy loam, but they can survive dude-worthy conditions too.
Since their roots travel no deeper than the depth of a can of beer, start planting 'em in shallow raised beds. Add sand and compost to any clay-laden dirt, ensuring that the beginning of the beds is shallow and perfect for your strawberry patch.
Picking Some Strawberries to Haul Away
Beyond the dirt, it's essential to know when to bid adieu to your trusty old strawberry plants. They produce their grooviest berries during their 2nd and 3rd year, but by their 4th, fertility starts to dwindle. Alternatively, they're bustin' out all over the place and hogging precious real estate.
If you're feeling sentimental, toss 'em into a retirement home along the edge of the woods. Wild strawberries naturally thrive at those locations, thanks to the handy runners they send out. Parent plants continuously churn out runners and yield a modest amount of fruit for occasional pickin'. They also pollinate the bees with their early spring blooms.

For raised beds, we typically go broad with a double wide zig-zag row. This layout allows for a more extensive patch, higher yields, and a hassle-free walk-through center. The zigzag pattern and expansive row result in a harmonious balance between sprawling and crowding.
Planting Your Damn Bare Root Strawberry Plants
I'm usually not a big fan of bare-root plants, but strawberries break the mold. These bad boys survive a trans-global trip without twitchin' an eye. Their roots are simple, and they adapt to being dug up, bagged, and shipped unlike other plants.
Bare roots are the best way to establish a strawberry patch as they self-populate within a year or two. Whenever you order 'em online, make sure they arrive cool and moist before planting. Springtime (in warmer climates) is the perfect time to get 'em in the ground.
When you're ready to plant, gently loosen 'em to avoid damage. Plant 'em just as you would with store-bought transplants, and voilà— you got yourself a fruitful strawberry patch.
