In a move towards promoting sustainable and shared mobility, the picturesque town of Gomaringen, Germany, is set to introduce a new addition to its transport options. From April 1st, residents and visitors alike will have the opportunity to borrow the "LaGomeRa" cargo bike, a generous gift from the island of La Gomera.

This versatile bike, designed for transporting both children and groceries, is the third of its kind in the region. The "LaGomeRa" cargo bike, a product of the Nehren-based company Radkutsche, boasts a cargo box that doubles as a child-friendly bench. It is also equipped with an electric motor for easy pedalling, making it an ideal choice for environmentally-conscious commuters.

The name "LaGomeRa" reflects the bike's origin, symbolising the cultural bond between Gomaringen and La Gomera. The idea for the cargo bike initiative in Gomaringen was spearheaded by Mayor Steffen Heß, who discovered the concept through a flyer at the old Stockach schoolhouse.

To rent the "LaGomeRa" cargo bike, users simply need to scan a QR code located on the bike. This scan grants access to the bike for temporary use, facilitating easy and flexible borrowing within the community. Anyone, including non-residents, can borrow the bike, but interested parties must show their ID before borrowing.

The municipality of Gomaringen received a discount on the purchase of the cargo bike, and the bike can be found at the Gomaringen town hall. The municipality will handle the rental initially, with Mayor Heß hoping that the rental position will become a volunteer position in the future.

This free community-accessible cargo bike program is an extension of the efforts made by the association "Citizens active for environment and people (short: baum e. V.)" in Dußlingen. The association, which set up the free rental offer in Dußlingen and other engaged citizens in Nehren in 2022, aims to encourage sustainable, shared mobility within communities.

With the introduction of the "LaGomeRa" cargo bike, Gomaringen continues to demonstrate its commitment to promoting eco-friendly transport solutions and fostering a sense of community within its town.

The "LaGomeRa" cargo bike, a symbol of the cultural connection between Gomaringen and La Gomera, is not only designed for transporting children and groceries but also serves as a bench for a child-friendly ride. As part of the town's home-and-garden, this sustainable living initiative encourages environmentally-conscious residents and visitors to utilize shared mobility options.
