Giant Historical Vessel 'Providence' Due to Arrive in 2019

Tall Ship Providence, a Historical Replica of the First Continental Navy Warship, to Make New Home in Old Town Alexandria

The Tall Ship Providence, a full-scale, 1976 replica of the Continental Navy's first warship, is set to make its new home port in Old Town Alexandria. This tall ship, built in the 1700s style, is a 12-gun, 110-foot "Sloop of War" that will bring a touch of history to the vibrant waterfront.

The Sailing Ships Providence Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organisation, operates the Providence. The foundation's mission is to promote maritime, naval, and American Revolutionary War history. The Providence was originally built for the Brown family, who also founded Brown University in the 1760s, and was later commissioned for an exact replica in 1976 for the United States Bicentennial Celebration.

The original Providence was the U.S. Navy's first warship, but it was deliberately sunk in 1779 to prevent capture by the British. The Providence that will be stationed in Alexandria is a replica of this historic vessel.

The Providence is expected to arrive in Old Town Alexandria in the early summer of 2019. Once it is stationed, the Tall Ship Providence Foundation will host tours, chartered cruises, and educational events to share the ship's rich history with the community. The foundation is currently focusing on fundraising for the restoration of the ship.

In addition to its historical significance, the Providence is also a symbol of the maritime heritage that played a crucial role in the founding of the United States. Its presence in Old Town Alexandria is expected to contribute to the area's cultural and educational offerings, making it an exciting addition to the city's waterfront.

The Tall Ship Providence Foundation is looking forward to welcoming visitors aboard the Providence once it is fully restored and stationed in its new home port. The foundation invites everyone to join them in preserving this important piece of American history and to learn more about the Providence's fascinating story.
