Gem Photography's annual competition, Gem-A Photographer of the Year, makes a comeback in 2019!

Calling all gemmology enthusiasts and photography lovers! The Gem-A Photographer of the Year competition is back for 2019, and it's an opportunity you won't want to miss. This year's competition is open to anyone with an interest in gemmology and a passion for photography, and entry is free.

The competition features new rules, a new judging process, and exciting prizes. Two runners-up will win a £50 Gem-A Instruments voucher, and the overall winner will receive a £300 voucher to spend at Gem-A Instruments and one year's free Membership of Gem-A. Winning entries could also be featured in Gems&Jewellery magazine.

So, what kind of photographs are we looking for? Entries could include photographs of jewellery, gemstone photomicrography, or scenes from gemstone mining or trading. The competition does not have categories; entries should display a unique interpretation of gemstones, gemmology, and the wider trade.

Last year, a winning entry featured a dandelion flower in a sapphire with a growth blockage and thin film rosette in Sri Lankan sapphire using modified Rheinberg illumination. The cover image for this year's competition is a 2017 entry featuring a Frog in Amber from the Dominican Republic.

The competition is currently open and will accept entries until August 30, 2019. Interested individuals can find the competition rules and details on how to enter by clicking the provided link. The winner will be announced on Gem-A's Facebook page shortly after the competition has closed.

If you're new to photography competitions, here are some general steps to follow:

1. **Eligibility**: Most photography competitions are open to anyone with an interest in the subject matter, which in this case would be gemmology and photography. Check the official website or contact the organisers for specific eligibility criteria. 2. **Category and Theme**: Look for details on specific categories or themes that the competition might focus on. For a gemmology-related competition, this could include photography of gemstones, jewellery, or related subjects. 3. **Submission Requirements**: Check if there are specific requirements for file formats, image sizes, or any editing restrictions. Some competitions might require original, unedited images, while others might allow for post-processing. 4. **Entry Process**: Typically, entries are submitted online through a dedicated portal on the competition's website. You might need to create an account or fill out a form with your contact information. 5. **Fees and Prizes**: Many competitions have entry fees, which can vary. Prizes might include cash awards, publication opportunities, or other recognition. 6. **Deadline**: Ensure you meet the submission deadline, as late entries are often not accepted.

For the Gem-A Photographer of the Year competition, you can find the exact rules and entry process on the official Gem-A website or by contacting Gem-A directly. Good luck, and we can't wait to see your stunning gemstone photographs!
