In the upscale neighborhood of Holmby Hills, tech mogul Eric Schmidt has made a significant real estate move by purchasing the iconic Spelling Manor for $110 million. This sprawling French chateau-style estate, originally built in 1990 for TV producer Aaron Spelling, spans approximately 56,500 square feet on nearly 5 acres[1][3][4][5].

The historic property, previously known as Candyland, is now referred to by Schmidt and his wife Wendy as "594," after its address at 594 S Mapleton Drive. The couple plans to use this estate primarily for hosting meetings and events related to local nonprofits and cultural institutions. They also intend to focus on improving the property's energy efficiency during any potential remodelling[1].

Schmidt's Los Angeles real estate portfolio is marked by this high-value, landmark acquisition. While specific details about other properties within his portfolio are not widely available, the scale and value of this purchase suggest a preference for prestigious, developed properties rather than primarily undeveloped land[1][3].

In addition to the Spelling Manor, Schmidt owns several other residences in Holmby Hills. These include Gregory Peck's former abode and a $65 million estate that was the longtime home of the late hotelier Barron Hilton[2].

Beyond his Los Angeles holdings, Schmidt also possesses a $65 million parcel of undeveloped land in the mountains high above Beverly Hills, which was last owned by the late tech billionaire Paul Allen[6].

Wendy Bowman, a real estate writer at the website, reported on Schmidt's latest acquisition. Bowman, who previously worked as a freelancer for Modern Luxury and several other media outlets, primarily covers luxury properties[7]. The listing for the Spelling Manor was held by Drew Fenton of Carolwood Estates, with Linda May of Carolwood representing Schmidt in the deal[8].

The Schmidts' acquisition of the Spelling Manor marks another significant addition to their real estate portfolio, which already includes over $300 million worth of luxury properties in the Los Angeles area alone[6]. The estate features numerous luxurious amenities, such as a bowling alley, a movie theater, a nightclub, a wine cellar, an aquarium, a beauty salon with massage and tanning rooms, 14 bedrooms, and 27 bathrooms[2].

Outdoor amenities include a massive backyard lawn, a pool and spa, fountains, a tennis court, citrus trees, and rose gardens[2]. The Schmidts' purchase of the Spelling Manor is one of the most expensive residential transactions in Los Angeles for the year[1][3][4][5].

In a separate development, Schmidt and his wife Wendy have also purchased a chateau-style dwelling in Vail, Colorado, known as A Car Collector's Dream Home. This opulent limestone-clad structure, spanning 56,000 square feet and sitting on nearly five manicured acres, is listed for $27,000,000 USD[9]. The house features two separate motor courts and covered parking with room for dozens of vehicles.

The article does not provide any information about the current owners of the house in Vail or the price history of the property[9]. The Schmidts purchased the house primarily to host meetings and events for local nonprofit and cultural institutions[10].

The Schmidts' primary focus for the newly acquired Spelling Manor seems to be on hosting meetings and events for local nonprofits and cultural institutions, indicating a lifestyle that prioritizes charitable giving and cultural engagement. This expensive acquisition, one of the most expensive residential transactions in Los Angeles for the year, demonstrates Schmidt's interest in high-value, developed properties like real estate and homes, particularly in the categories of luxury properties and home-and-garden.

Wendy Bowman, a real estate writer, reported on Schmidt's latest acquisition, which is not only an addition to their extensive real estate portfolio in Los Angeles but also includes the chateau-style dwelling in Vail, Colorado, known as A Car Collector's Dream Home. This estates' purchase is seemingly aimed at expanding their opportunities for hosting events, rather than solely for investing purposes, showing a blend of finance, lifestyle, and real-estate interests.
