Exploring Nature Made Simple
In the spirit of promoting quality planning and preparation for outdoor activities, Recreation Aotearoa is urging people to make use of the new Plan My Walk app. This innovative trip-planning tool, designed to support Aotearoa's unique tramping and walking culture, is now available for download.
The Plan My Walk app, developed based on five years of incident analysis, aims to reduce the number of preventable tramping incidents by encouraging sound decision-making while out in the tracks. With over 1000 tracks, each featuring essential information to help users build a plan, the app is ideal for discovering nearby tracks or planning overnight trips in the local area.
The app offers a range of features to support users, including MetService weather updates, track alerts, user trip reviews, a customisable gear list, and the ability to add trip notes, daily schedules, and documents to share with friends or emergency contacts.
As part of Get Outdoors Week 2021, which is currently ongoing, users have the opportunity to participate in a draw to win a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) by posting a photo on social media with the hashtag #GOWeekNZ. To enter, simply post a photo of your outdoor adventure using the Plan My Walk app.
In a seven-year period from 2012 to 2019, being unprepared for weather conditions caused 12% of tramping-related search and rescues (SAR). Lack of warm layered clothing and/or a waterproof jacket resulted in 13% of tramping-related SAR over the same period. An overambitious choice of route, lack of sufficient fitness, and taking longer than expected to reach the destination accounted for 30% of tramping-related SAR.
By using the Plan My Walk app, users can ensure they are well-prepared for their outdoor adventures, helping to reduce the number of preventable incidents and making their trips safer and more enjoyable. The app can be downloaded from the preferred app store or checked out online at www.planmywalk.nz.
So, grab your gear, download the Plan My Walk app, and get outdoors to explore the beauty of Aotearoa while ensuring your safety. Don't forget to share your adventure using the hashtag #GOWeekNZ for a chance to win a Personal Locator Beacon. Happy exploring!
