The Makerspace Maschinendorf on Birkenstraße hosted a vibrant program of workshops, lectures, and demonstrations on Saturday, July 5th. The event, a collaboration between Maschinendorf and the GarageLab association, took place on a 2,500 square meter area and attracted several hundred visitors of all ages.

One of the highlights of the festival was the 3D printing workshop, led by Michael Berger, a goldsmith and workshop leader. The workshop offered an introduction to the topic, and a teapot was live-printed using cutting-edge 3D printers like the YUMI with multicolor printing supporting 12 independent colors. The introductory lecture was so popular that it had to be repeated several times due to the large number of visitors.

A surprising high proportion of women, over 60 percent, attended the event, both as visitors and workshop participants. Michael Boeck, who led the "Welding for Dummies" workshop, stated that he didn't expect a 50 percent female share in such a traditionally male-dominated field.

The summer festival also featured metalworking, with photos by Dirk Schmidt, and an exhibition of the possibilities and numerous different machines was showcased in the metal workshop. Florian Knobel demonstrated what can be done with the CNC milling machine.

Visitors had the opportunity to participate in numerous other workshops, including T-shirt design with screen printing, turning for beginners, a ceramics taster course, working with a laser cutter, and turning. In the wood workshop, both practical work and artistic pieces were created.

The "Team RepairCafe" presented its work from the past ten years at the event, and the festival ended with cool drinks and culinary delights in the courtyard of Birkenstraße. Kristin Parlow from the GarageLab association's board agreed, calling the day inspiring.

The increasing market growth and evolving intellectual property frameworks, particularly in Europe, have further accelerated innovation and protected digital design assets, fueling industry expansion and adoption. The Makerspace Maschinendorf summer festival reflects broader trends in 3D printing technology progress, where rapid prototyping and production-scale printing are becoming more widespread, especially impacting sectors such as automotive with customized parts, lightweight materials, and sustainability-focused designs. The festival likely featured these advancements to engage the maker community and industry enthusiasts.

  1. Visitors were introduced to a variety of workshops, including one focused on fashion and beauty, where they could participate in T-shirt design with screen printing, working with a laser cutter, or turning, showcasing the evolving trends in the makerspace industry.
  2. In the lifestyle section of the festival, home and garden enthusiasts discovered new possibilities with the CNC milling machine demonstration, as well as the exhibition of various machines in the metal workshop, reflecting the increasingly widespread adoption of rapid prototyping and production-scale printing, particularly in sectors such as automotive and sustainability-focused designs.
