Smoke-Free Beaches: A Growing Trend in MV? 🌊

Kick back, relax, and breathe in the fresh sea air—that's the dream when visiting MV's relaxation havens. But what if those beach vacays were even smoke-free? That's exactly what some tourism destinations are considering!

This trend follows the footsteps of Göhren on Rügen, whose smoke-free beach sections were introduced back in 2010, as revealed by Alexander Stein from the Göhren tourist administration.

"Families with young ones appreciate these non-smoking areas," Stein explains. Yet, expanding the smoke-free beach sections isn't currently on the horizon. Instead, this topic sparks heated discussions every summer.

Göhren paved the way 🌊

According to Stein, the idea blossomed from a 2009 poll conducted by the tourist administration—the creation of non-smoking beach areas ranked the highest among holidaymakers' wishes, attracting 32% approval.* Consequently, in 2010, signs marked two sections as "Smoking is not desired here." Ashes were discouraged everywhere, making Göhren among the first German destinations to establish smoke-free beach areas.

Is a smoke-free beach craze brewing in MV? 🚫🤝

Birgit Hesse, president of the MV tourism association, acknowledges that smoke-free beaches are a sensible way to protect families with children. However, the picture varies across the state.

For instance, Binz bay boasts a smoke-free coexistence, with five active beach areas and three large family beaches specifically designed for athletes, families, and sea air enthusiasts. Signs grace the beach accesses to make tourists aware of the smoke-free areas, much like those found in Rostock.

Not on board? That's cool too! 💁‍♀️

However, in various coastal resorts like Boltenhagen, Rerik, and Usedom, there are no non-smoking beach sections, instead providing ashtrays for those who light up. And there are even places where the introduction of non-smoking beach zones has been withdrawn, such as Koserow.

The smoking ban in public spaces in France may be influencing MV tourism practices, given the example of Prerow, where the local council is set to discuss smoke-free beach sections at a future meeting.

Ultimately, the decision rests with each municipality, says Hesse, who adds that complaints about smoke pollution on beaches remain minimal.

Enrichment Data:While details about the expansion of smoke-free beach zones in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are scarce, environmental conservation and sustainable tourism practices are key objectives championed regionally. Complaints about cigarette smoke on the beaches are rare, suggesting limited public concern. For more specific information, it is best to contact local government or tourism boards in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
