Expanded library opening hours on Sundays at Dusseldorf's Main Library
Expanded Sunday Hours at Dusseldorf's Central Library
Starting January 5, 2025, the Central Library at Konrad Adenauer Platz (KAP1) will extend its Sunday operating hours, providing visitors with an extended opportunity to browse books, read magazines, or utilise other services. The new hours will stretch from 11:00 to 18:00, making it possible for more residents to enjoy the library on Sundays.
The Central Library has become a popular destination for families with young children, as well as young adults aged 15 to 25. Approximately 3,000 people visit the library every Sunday, with many working Dusseldorf residents viewing it as a 'living room' in the city.
In contrast, the libraries in Bilk, Eller, and Unterbach will continue to operate from 13:00 to 18:00 on Sundays. It is worth noting that only the Central Library at Konrad Adenauer Platz has extended its Sunday operating hours.
The Bücherhalle Neugraben will also join the list of Sunday-open libraries, starting from January 5, 2025. Guests over 18 with a valid library card will be able to access the premises from 7:00 to 22:00 under FlexiBib rules, without professional staff on duty.
Security personnel will be present during opening hours at KAP1, Bilk, and Eller libraries, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all visitors. However, there will be no staff consultation on Sundays at any of the libraries.
More Sunday events have been offered at the Central Library since fall, further enhancing the Sunday experience for visitors. Unfortunately, no information is provided about the number of visitors or demographics of visitors to the libraries in Bilk, Eller, and Unterbach.
Access to the Unterbach library is granted via the library card. No such requirement exists for the other libraries.
The Sunday opening of libraries has proven to be a successful model, offering residents a quiet and peaceful space to unwind and engage in cultural activities on their day off.
