Essential Measures for Homeowners to Safeguard Floors

In modern apartments, a variety of floor coverings are used to cater to different needs and preferences. From durable and moisture-resistant options like ceramic tiles, laminate, vinyl (especially luxury vinyl tiles), and parquet, to softer and more comfortable choices such as carpets, each flooring type has its unique advantages.

For households with pets or children, or simply those with busy lifestyles, washable rugs are a beneficial addition. They can be easily machine washed, making cleaning a breeze.

Laminate and vinyl floors, being more affordable, are commonly used in homes, particularly in kitchens, hallways, and playrooms. On the other hand, tile and stone can chip with a blow and lose their shine unless properly maintained. To protect these floors, consider using rugs, rug pads, and rug underlay.

In high-traffic areas, lay hallway runners to shield your flooring and add warmth. For dents in carpet, rub an ice cube over the dent until it melts, then gently fluff the fibres with a spoon or fork. For stains on rugs, blot clean with mild detergent and water, or use a washable rug for machine cleaning.

Hardwood and engineered timber floors are popular choices in living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas. They resemble wood or stone, are not easily stained, but require protection against grit and sharp blows. For minor scratches, use a wooden repair marker or a wax filler in a matching colour. To prevent scratches, trim pet nails and use furniture sliders when moving heavy items.

In the bathroom, kitchen, and entry areas, tile and stone floors are ideal due to their resistance to water and heat. To protect hardwood floors, use rug pads to prevent them from getting easily scratched, dented, and warped.

Maintaining humidity between 40 and 60% is crucial for timber floors to prevent cupping or gapping. Blotting spills immediately helps avoid stains on the floors. Using felt pads on chair and table legs can prevent grit build-up that can scratch floors.

Install caster cups under heavy furniture to prevent indentations. Placing entryway mats traps dirt and grit, reducing scratches and water damage. With these tips, you can keep your floors looking great for years to come.
