Embrace the Buy Local Initiative by Visiting Farmers' Markets in Maryland for Homegrown Produce
Embracing the joy of local shopping, I can't resist gushing about my beloved Maryland. Even though I've resided elsewhere, this state holds a special place in my heart as my home turf.
From the breathtaking Atlantic Ocean in the east to the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains in the west, Maryland offers an array of stunning landscapes within a mere three-hour drive. It's a haven for horse farms nestled amidst rolling hills and boasts picturesque historic downtown main streets that exude charm.
Annapolis stands out not only as our state capital but also as America's Sailing Capital. And, let's not forget about our dedicated farmers scattering across this relatively small state. While you won't find the expansive corn and wheat fields of the Midwest, Maryland is abundant with family-run farms managing Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs and gracing farmers' markets with their produce.
🌽 Buy Local Challenge 🌽
The Maryland Office of Tourism has spearheaded a fantastic initiative from July 18th-26th, inviting consumers to incorporate at least one locally farm-grown food item into their daily routine during the challenge week. By partaking in the state's annual Buy Local Challenge, supporters can help uplift Maryland farmers. Businesses, organizations, hospitals, and individuals can pledge to do their part by buying, eating, or showcasing local produce, and document their progress via social media, using the hashtag #BuyLocalChallenge.
Originating eight years ago, the Challenge was spearheaded by the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission to promote healthy eating habits and bolster the local economy.
Interestingly, July is a prime month to visit farmers' markets in Maryland, with an abundance of fresh produce at its peak. The variety in both fruits and vegetables is almost mind-boggling!
Visiting the Carroll County Farmers' Market in Westminster on Saturdays is worth your time. Established in the 1930s, it's the second oldest farmers' market in Maryland. During my time living near Westminster, my sister and her husband ran Truffula Seed Produce, operating a booth at this bustling market filled with an incredible selection of produce along with flowers, artisan breads, cheeses, and more!
If you're up for more ways to support the Buy Local Challenge, indulging in farm-to-table dining at establishments like Founding Farmers, VOLT, and Woodberry Kitchen offers a savory option! Discover how you can participate and support restaurants by clicking here.
