Eco-conscious bathroom designers selecting eco-friendly flooring options for sustainable project designs
In the realm of interior design, sustainability has become a significant focus over the past decade. This shift is evident in every room, including bathrooms, where eco-friendly materials are increasingly popular. One such material that stands out is Terrazzo.
Terrazzo, a durable and water-resistant flooring option, is born from the reuse of marble and stone chips that might otherwise be discarded. It works well with underfloor heating, copes with daily cleaning without losing its character, and is a sustainable choice for bathroom remodel.
Major bathroom brands now offer a range of Terrazzo tiles, alongside Recycled Porcelain and Reclaimed Porcelain options. Terrazzo tiles come in sizes 60 x 60 cm, 40 x 40 cm, and 20 x 20 cm, while Recycled Porcelain tiles come in sizes 20 x 20 cm and 4.8 x 45 cm. Reclaimed Porcelain tiles are available in size 60 x 30 cm.
Recycled tiles, made using offcuts and waste materials, are low impact, super hard-wearing, and versatile. They are also non-porous and stain-resistant, making them an attractive option for bathroom floors.
Bamboo is another sustainable material for flooring, growing much faster than other natural materials and being easily regrown. It is typically better with moisture than other floor types like real oak and laminate, making it more suitable in a bathroom, but it should be pre-treated and protected with a lacquer to prevent water damage.
Cork, harvested from the bark of cork oak trees without harming the tree, offers an earthy, natural look for bathrooms. Recycled glass tile, made from post-consumer products like bottles and windows, is another non-porous, stain-resistant surface that is infinitely configurable for colour and pattern.
Grazzie Wilson, head of creative at Ca' Pietra, oversees product collections and the company's distinctive brand. She has worked in the interiors industry for more than a decade. According to Wilson, these sustainable materials are not just trends, but a reflection of a growing consciousness towards the environment.
In addition to these materials, other sustainable bathroom ideas include reclaimed wood and microcement. Reclaimed wood is any wood floor type that has previously been used in the construction of a past building or structure. Microcement is a hot material on the block, offering a seamless, tactile alternative to tiles, and it's super durable and can be applied on top of existing surfaces.
As we move towards a more sustainable future, these eco-friendly materials are set to become even more prevalent in bathroom design. By choosing these materials, not only are we making a stylish choice, but we're also making a choice for the environment.
