Dusseldorf: The Democratic Republic of Congo calls upon the less fortunate to partake in a meal of schnitzel and fries
On the 26th of December, the German Red Cross (DRK) set up a festive Christmas village on Johannes-Rau-Platz in Düsseldorf. This annual event, organised by Angelika Jaroschek and Ralf Schön from DRK Düsseldorf, welcomed 250 guests who were treated to a hearty meal and a warm atmosphere.
The menu for the day included schnitzel with fries and coleslaw, all prepared using the DRK's "GW Pommes" kitchen container, equipped with cooktops, oven, deep fryers, cooling options, and warming trays. A candy bar was also available, where guests could fill their own bags with treats.
Tents were set up for seating, offering drinks and sweets, and there was even a designated area for four-legged companions. The Jugendrotkreuz team participated as volunteers, contributing to the success of the event.
This was the 16th time the DRK volunteers in Düsseldorf have organised this action on the second Christmas day. To make the event more enjoyable for the guests, the menu was changed based on feedback received.
In addition to the food, donations were distributed to the guests, who were also prepared with bags containing hygiene items. The Jugendrotkreuz team, known for their regular group sessions, were enthusiastic about being involved in a real-life situation.
The new equipment wagon allowed for on-site food preparation, delighting Jaroschek and Schön. The Jugendrotkreuz did not have a specific role in the catering of the event, but they were instrumental in ensuring the smooth running of the event.
As the DRK volunteers went along the Rhine with donation boxes, asking passersby for their support, the 16th annual Christmas event in Düsseldorf was a resounding success. For more information about the DRK's work and youth activities, visit drk.de/ueber-uns/jugendrotkreuz/.
