Technomic's Breakfast Consumer Trend Report Reveals Shift Towards Digital Platforms and Quality Meals
Breakfast habits are evolving, with a significant shift towards digital platforms and a focus on quality meals that cater to busy urban lifestyles, according to Technomic's Breakfast Consumer Trend Report.
The report highlights that consumers are increasingly seeking breakfast options that balance value and high food quality. There is a growing demand for nutritious meals that don't compromise on taste or health benefits.
Convenience is another key factor, with ready-to-eat, portable, and minimal-preparation foods being favored. This reflects consumers' need for quick and practical options without sacrificing nutritional value.
The report also reveals that breakfast offerings are adapting to a mix of dine-in and carry-out preferences. Many establishments now provide both dine-in and takeout services, along with third-party delivery options, addressing consumers’ varied eating occasions and convenience needs.
Digital ordering and partnerships with delivery services are becoming integral to meeting consumer expectations for convenience and accessibility. Customers can easily and quickly order breakfast items digitally for pickup or delivery, enhancing the overall experience.
The ability to order through a mobile app is among the top three most important attributes when deciding where to purchase breakfast. Ordering via mobile apps has risen by 8% since 2021, from 35% to 43%.
Mobile payment has seen a significant jump since 2021, especially on weekdays. On weekdays, 22% of consumers use mobile payment compared to 14% a few years back. On weekends, 28% of consumers are looking for inexpensive breakfast options, an increase from 22% in 2021.
Operators can increase check averages and leverage profit opportunities by encouraging add-ons and unique beverages, as consumers are seeking variety. More health-focused items and new flavors, including globally inspired ingredients, are desired by consumers in restaurant breakfast menus.
The report also suggests that the rise of specialty coffee and tea concepts presents a challenge for restaurants to compete.
Breakfast data was collected by Technomic through an online survey of 1,500 consumers in October. The survey did not provide information about the weekend's mobile payment usage increase or decrease.
In conclusion, the trends highlighted in the report indicate that consumers want breakfast to be a convenient, quality, and flexible meal experience fitting their lifestyles.
