Contemplating the Kandy to Ella train: A candidate for the world's most breathtaking rail voyage?
Experience the Stunning Sri Lanka Hill Country Train Ride
Jump aboard the unforgettable train journey from Kandy to Ella, a trip that takes just over six hours but is worth every moment. You can break up the journey by stopping off in Nuwara Eliya, a picturesque town ideal for exploring tea plantations.
Labeled one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world, this adventure is high on many travelers' must-do lists. But reserve your seat in advance to secure a spot—rocking up on the day might leave you hanging over the open doorway instead!
Discover the Thrill of the Kandy to Ella Train
Sri Lankan train travel is surprisingly affordable, with both slower and newer 'blue' trains plying the route. For the best views, nab a second-class ticket: first-class seats are air-conditioned with nobody hanging out the windows for photo ops, while third class looks seriously crowded for picture-taking!
The scenery is breathtaking: tea plantations, waterfalls, misty mountains, and stunning landscapes stream by as you slowly make your way towards Ella. The journey goes by surprisingly fast, but remember, a brisk pace means you'll miss the chance to soak it all in!
Unfortunately, the second leg of the Kandy to Ella train ride might have a few hiccups. Clouds and mist can obscure the views, and once, there was even a six-armed police escort in our carriage! Let's hope your train journey is smoother than mine!
Securing Your Seat on the Kandy to Ella Train
Several trains serve this route daily, with some offering overnight sleeper services. But you'll want to check out the journey during daylight hours.
Reserved seats can be booked up to 30 days in advance, but you'll have to do it in person. Alternatively, you can ask your accommodation to reserve tickets before your arrival.
However, many agents buy these tickets in bulk and sell them at a higher price. A quick online search should help you find reliable agents to book your tickets and ensure you don't miss out on this incredible experience.
Unreserved tickets can be bought on the day, so arrive early to secure one. The second class, with its wide windows, offers the best views, while third class looks a bit cramped.
