Dive In, Saxony-Anhalt's Bathing Waters Nail the "Excellent" Grade!
Kickoff of Nationwide Swimming Season - 61 Waters Across Country Given 'Excellent' Rating - Commencement of Water Recreational Period - 61 Nationwide Sites Report 'Outstanding' Quality
Swimmers and sunbathers in Saxony-Anhalt can breathe a sigh of relief as almost all bathing spots are ready for the upcoming season. A whopping 90% of the state's 69 designated bathing waters boast excellent water quality, according to the health department in Magdeburg ahead of the bathing season's official kick-off on May 18th.
That's right, 61 out of the 69 swim-worthy lakes from Arendsee to Zeitz have passed with flying colors. Last year, we saw 61 out of 68 lakes earning the "excellent" title. The Klietz lake, previously flagged as "deficient" for 2024, has made a comeback this year owing to measures like drainage ditch management and planned reed belt renaturation.
A breath of fresh air for those in Teutschenthal (Saalekreis), the Pappelgrund family and nature bath reopens this season under new management, having closed last year for operational reasons. The evaluation process for bathing waters took into account water quality indices and various sources of pollution, including wading through water samples and checking water clarity for gross contamination on-site.

Now, let's delve into the science behind water quality assessment for bathing waters. Regular evaluation of these waters is crucial for ensuring public health. The European Union's Bathing Water Directive (2006/7/EC) sets the minimum requirements for bathing water quality. This includes monitoring parameters like microbiological quality (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci levels) and other physical or chemical parameters affecting bathing water quality.
Bathing waters earn ratings ranging from "excellent" to "poor" based on their microbiological quality. A "excellent" rating indicates that the water has consistently adhered to the highest quality standards over time, as per the EU guidelines. Stay tuned for updates on water quality standards and ratings as the bathing season progresses!
In the midst of Saxony-Anhalt's vibrant outdoor-living scene, the importance of maintaining community policy regarding bathing water quality can't be overstated. While enjoying the Excellent grade beaches, locals might consider expanding their knowledge through vocational training programs in home-and-garden, teaching them the science behind water quality assessment for bathing waters, which upholds public health and adheres to EU guidelines.
