Commemoration Event Scheduled for September 14th
On Sunday, September 14th, 2025, the city center of Euskirchen will open its historic buildings from 11 am to 5 pm, inviting visitors to step back in time and explore the rich history of the region.
One of the highlights of the day will be the guided tours of the Evangelical Church tower, which will start every hour from 11 am, with the last tour at 4 pm. The church, rebuilt in 1952, boasts a five-story tower showcasing remains from 1894.
The Honor Cemetery, located at the former mourning hall on Frauenberger Straße, is another must-visit. Inaugurated as a memorial for the fallen of World War I and the war dead of 1936-1945, the cemetery houses a variety of war graves and memorials. The two-part Honor Cemetery is particularly notable for its simple grave made of greywacke commemorating the unknown war dead, and the stele made of Muschelkalk symbolizing the memorial for the Russian fallen.
Visitors can also learn about the ecumenical project "Living Cemetery" at the cemetery. The Rhenish Association for Monument Preservation and Landscape Protection e.V. will provide insights into their work, and basic questions about monument protection will be answered at the info stand, FB 9, Lower Heritage Authority.
For those interested in war history, guided tours on the topics of "80 Years After the War's End in Euskirchen" and "War Graves Care - Insights into a Cultural Remembrance Task" are available. The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge e.V., North Rhine-Westphalia branch, has an info stand at the cemetery.
The "Casino" society house at Kaplan-Kellermann-Str.1, rebuilt in 1928 in the Art Deco style, will also be open. High-quality halls and vaulted cellars await visitors, and the venue will host a piano concert at 4 pm. Children's coloring pages will be available for younger visitors, and the "Café Paradise" will be open for refreshments.
The Eisenbahnfreunde Euskirchen e.V. will be on hand to explain the "Zucker-Susi" and other locomotives at the "Prussian Locomotive Shed" at Ost Street 2a, which will be open for the day.
Lastly, the Euskirchen City Museum, Wilhelmstraße 32-34, will be open with the special exhibition "Rebirth in Peace. Euskirchen 1945-1961". However, the search results do not provide information about who will lead the tours for the Open Monument Day on September 14, 2025.
Visitors are encouraged to explore the city's historic buildings, learn about its past, and enjoy the various activities on offer during the Open Monument Day in Euskirchen.
