Citywide Transportation Alternatives in Neustadt: No Motor Vehicles Allowed

On Sunday, July 20, 2025, Dresden's Neustadt district will host a significant car-free action at the intersection of Bischofsweg and Kamenzer Straße. This event, organised by the community group "Verkehrswende Dresden," aims to demonstrate the benefits of car-free zones and promote a reduction in car traffic as a means of combating climate and environmental challenges.

Under the motto "City for all, not just for cars," the action will temporarily close the intersection to motorised traffic from 10 am to 9 pm. The organisers hope to show how public space can be utilised without car traffic, thereby promoting sustainable transport modes such as walking, cycling, and public transit.

The car-free day also presents an opportunity to raise awareness about the advantages of car-free urban spaces, encourage behavioural change, and physically illustrate the potential for reduced car dependency in neighbourhoods like Neustadt. This could lead to improved air quality, better urban livability, and potentially influence local policy towards permanent car-free zones.

The organisers, in collaboration with residents and other groups, have planned a full-day program for the intersection. The event will feature music, street cafes, workshops, and interactive activities, creating a vibrant and pedestrian-friendly atmosphere.

While specific traffic changes for the day are not yet detailed, transport users may expect some adjustments due to the closure. However, the primary emphasis is on community-led environmental and urban amenity goals achieved through the car-free action.

"Verkehrswende Dresden" has been advocating for a new traffic policy since 2018, with previous urban interventions demonstrating their commitment to alternative city designs with more space for encounters, play, and culture. The car-free action on July 20 serves as an example of this vision, promoting a city that prioritises people over cars.

Thousands of passenger cars drive through the neighbourhood every day, contributing to noise, exhaust fumes, heat, and accidents. The car-free action aims to challenge this norm and inspire a shift towards a more sustainable and livable city.
