City unveils 'ESSEN 51: Customs Road/Horse-Rail Road' infrastructure blueprint
The city of Essen has announced the public display of the development plan for ESSEN 51, a new city quarter located in the transition zone of Altendorf, Bochold, and Nordviertel, northwest of the city centre. The development plan will be available for viewing from September 16 to October 16, both in person and online.
The development plan, titled "ESSEN 51: Zollstraße/Pferdebahnstraße," encompasses approximately 38.7 hectares of the former Krupp steel foundry within the city development area Krupp-Guertel. The plan aims to create a diverse mix of uses, including approximately 1,700 new housing units, high-quality service and commercial establishments, and urban living.
Central green areas with open watercourses will be integrated into the design to enhance ecological quality and connect the area with the surrounding open spaces. The Amalie shaft monument will serve as an identification point for the area, featuring attractive public spaces such as a market square and largely car-free access areas.
Two large public playgrounds, a primary school, and several daycare centres will be constructed to provide social infrastructure for children. The new city railway also crosses ESSEN 51, ensuring a connection to public transportation via two new stops.
In the northern area of the planning zone, the focus is on high-quality, potentially technology-oriented commerce, including service units, offices, and gastronomy.
Interested citizens are invited to participate in the planning process for ESSEN 51. Statements can be submitted electronically or by other means to the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations via the city portal during the publication and display period, which ends on October 16.
The development plan can be viewed in person at the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations, Lindenallee 10, Germany House, 5th floor, Room 508. The planning documents are also available online at www.our website/stadtplanung.
